Rock Valley Childrens Choir
Chorus - Leah Baskin: Director
The Rock Valley Childrens Choir, a performing and education choral organization, was established in 2002 at Rock Valley College in Rockford, IL by Leah Baskin and Dean Durst. Beginning as one small choir, the program has grown to become four separate choruses which encompass grades one through twelve.
The choir has sung in concert with the Rockford Symphony Orchestra, Rock Valley Master Chorale, Kantorei, the Singing Boys of Rockford, and the Mendelssohn Symphony and Chorale. They have performed at the Coronado Theater, sung for regional libraries and museums, presented at music educators conferences, participated in youth choral festivals, and performed for public and private civic groups in the Rock Valley College tri-county area. The choir went on their first week-long festival tour in June, 2011. Weekly rehearsals and optional monthly Saturday workshops provide many occasions for children to grow both as singers and as responsible citizens.
Children in the Rock Valley Childrens Choir come from all types of schools and education programs including public, private, parochial and home school settings. The singers come from all over the Rock River Valley area and represent fourteen different communities. Each week Leah Baskin, the choirs director, brings a variety of learning experiences and styles, including Kodaly, Orff, and High/Scope Movement approaches to the childrens rehearsals. Linda Smith serves as the choirs talented accompanist and assistant director. Brandi Blaesing is our accomplished Choir Services Coordinator.
Unique to the Rock Valley Childrens Choir are the yearly Singers Songbook repertoire concerts in which all singers learn two dozen songs from the great American heritage of songs for intergenerational community singing, and their charity themed fall concerts for which all proceeds support a variety of youth-friendly organizations. These activities honor our musical past and support our communitys future while making better citizens of todays youth.
